| In 1967, a small
group of men and women began gathering in Kansas City to study principles of
horsemanship. In 1973, the study group formed the Kansas City Dressage Society.
The founding board of directors included Arlene Rigdon, Ginny Garey, Linda
Landers, Pauline Cook, Sue Peeler, Sarah Seton, Susan Spivey, Lois Arnold, Jean
Coop, Fred Pulliam, Jan Proud and Jim Peeler.
In the first year
of existence, KCDS was instrumental in the establishment of the United States
Dressage Federation. A group of dressage enthusiasts, including Arlene Rigdon,
met in Lincoln NE at the request of Lowell Boomer....the USDF was born! KCDS
was of the largest dressage organizations in the country at this time and
became a charter member of the USDF.
The
purpose of this organization shall be the education of the members and
the public in the true meaning of dressage training and the practical
application thereof in all equestrian endeavors. The membership shall strive to
promote the interest and appreciation of other riders, and of the general
public, in the art of dressage.
To that end, KCDS
offers clinics and other training opportunities from notable dressage
authorities, sponsors recognized shows, offers judge and instructor education
programs, sponsors adult and junior dressage camps and offers lectures and
discussions on a wide variety of topics related to horse care and training.
The KCDS board meets the first Monday of every month and
welcomes all members to come participate in the legacy of that first study
group back in 1967!
